History

On November in 1918, during the restructuring of the second government of the first Republic of Armenia, Ministry of Welfare has been established, which on 8 of April in 1919 it was renamed Ministry of Welfare and Labor.

On 8 of January in 1920 the ministry was renamed the ministry of Welfare and Rehabilitation which had the following sections: an orphanage, immigration, organization of work, medical-sanitary, labor protection, architecture, construction.

After the establishment of the Soviet Regime, on 22 of December in 1920, by 17th decree of ASSR Revolution Committee, was organized The National Commissariat of Health of Armenia.

The National Health Commissars of the Soviet Socialistic Republic of Armenia were:

1925-1927 . Garegin Gardashyan
1927-1937. Gevorg Ghevondyan
1937-1940. Babken Astvatsatryan
1940-1945. Stepan Chshmarityan.

In 1946 The National Commissariat of Health of Armenia was reorganized as the Ministry of Health of the Soviet Socialistic Republic of Armenia, in which structure were included preventive care, mother and child preventive care sanitary-epidemiological and 4th departments, units of scientific, human resources, medical statistics, administrative-economic, delivery.

As a result of the Referendum held on September 21, 1991 The Ministry of Health of the Soviet Socialistic Republic of Armenia was proclaimed Independent Republic of Armenia.
